In a press conference held after the event, the 34-year-old Scotsman revealed that he is inspired by a Brazilian fighter specializing in grappling: Demian Maia. Craig's admiration for Demian is so great that his daughter's name, Maia, was chosen in honor of the São Paulo native.
“I have always admired the Demian Maia. That's why my daughter's name is in honor of him, Demian Maia. Her name is Maia, obviously. And I got to meet him, I got to see in person how good his jiu-jitsu is. So, for me, he was the guy,” he revealed. Paul Craig.
With 13 finishes in his career, Paul Craig is just one away from equaling the Demian Maia. In the UFC octagon, however, the Scotsman still has a long way to go, as he has seven triumphs through jiu-jitsu, compared to 11 Demian Maia, which, in this regard, is only second to Charles of the Bronx.
Victory over Nikita Krhylov should guarantee Paul Craig a place in the top 10 of the light heavyweight division. The Scot entered the octagon in eleventh place, while the Ukrainian was in ninth place.
