It's not just in football that VAR causes controversy. On Saturday night (17), at UFC Las Vegas 75, the video replay nullified one of the most brutal knockouts of the year and, narrowly, did not take away the victory from Carlos Hernandez about Ukrainian Denys Bondar.
In the third round of the fight, Hernandez landed a beautiful takedown on Bondar, who hit his head in the octagon and was unable to react. The fighter of Mexican descent then threw several elbows at his rival. The referee took a while to stop the punishment and the Ukrainian started to black out and wake up from the blows he had suffered.

Hernandez celebrated the victory, but then went through a few tense minutes. The video referee came into action and noticed an accidental clash of heads after Bondar hit his head on the ground. The combat mediator – who had already taken a long time to interrupt the dispute – was called to watch the replay and, even without evidence in the VT, decided that the knockout was caused by the clash of heads and not by the fall.
As a result, as the fight had already passed halfway through the third round, the side judges' sheets were requested and, despite the scare, Carlos Hernandez was declared the winner against Denys Bondar in the judges' technical decision (29-28, 30-27, 29-28).
