Former challenger Stephen Thompson says he deserves to fight for the welterweight belt if he beats an undefeated prospect

The 'Wonderboy' stated that he is not afraid of facing Shavktar Rakhmonov and declared that the winner of the clash will be worthy of fighting for the title in the sequel

Former welterweight challenger (up to 77,1kg), Stephen Thompson believes he is very close to a new opportunity to fight for the title of the biggest MMA organization in the world. In a statement to the program “Wo n't Back Down”, the 'Wonderboy' stated that he will be worthy of fighting for the Ultimate belt if he beats the undefeated prospect Shavkat Rakhmonov No. UFC 296.

“People are looking at this guy, undefeated, he won 100% of his fights the fast way. Nobody wants to fight this guy, so here I am. I'm like, you know, I'm going to fight someone ranked higher than me, probably one of the toughest guys in the division that nobody wants to fight. I will fight Shavkhat. Let's go. Let’s make it happen,” Thompson said.

The North American said that the winner of the duel should fight for the welterweight belt next against Leon edwards ou Colby covington.

“I believe if I go there and I beat this guy, I should be fighting for the title after this fight between Leon (Edwards) and Colby (Covington). I think Shavkhat does too. So, if I beat this guy, I'm looking at another title shot again”, concluded 'Wonderboy'.

Ranked seventh in the welterweight rankings, Stephen is coming off a victory over Kevin holland in his last fight, in December 2022. UFC 291, held in July, the North American would face the Brazilian Michael PereiraHowever, the Brazilian athlete didn't make weight and 'Wonderboy' refused to face him.

Thompson's next appointment will be at UFC 296, scheduled for December 16th. The striking veteran will measure up against the prospect Shavkat Rakhmonov who is undefeated in professional MMA with 17 consecutive victories.
