Keeping an eye on the controversial scenario created among UFC athletes, John McCarthy used his experience to warn Dricus Du Plessis to soften their provocations in the face of Sean Strickland. Aware that the South African attacked the childhood traumas of the middleweight champion (up to 83,9 kg), the renowned referee stated that, if the pace continues in this way, the athlete will go beyond his limits, just as Colby covington.

“I’m looking to see what Du Plessis does about the conversation. And if he starts bringing that crap, then I'll put him in the section Colby covington of ‘You’re losing your way’. Because everyone has problems,” said McCarthy during an episode of his podcast 'Weighing In'.

When justifying his speech, the MMA icon stated that fighters have feelings and 'demons' to deal with in addition to provocations.

“He has feelings, he has memories, he has demons. And those demons are sometimes not his fault. And that happens with a lot of fighters and stuff, you know, you take a look and people often dehumanize fighters based on the fact that they go in there and punch another person and they don't have feelings, no. have emotions. It's bullshit. Fighters are people,” he concluded.

In an episode marked by excessive provocation, Dricus Du Plessis offended Sean Strickland when remembering abuse suffered by the athlete as a child. After the event, the middleweight champion went public to demonstrate his irritation with the level reached by his rival and narrated several moments in which he suffered when he lived with his parents. The situation, however, divided opinions, with many calling 'Tarzan' a hypocrite.
