So far, in the 2024 season, two linear champions have put their titles on the line in the most famous octagon and both have lost. At the UFC 297, held in January, the North American Sean Strickland was defeated by the South African Dricus Du Plessis in a controversial split decision by the judges.

In the next numbered event, in the UFC 298, the challenger for the featherweight belt (up to 65,7kg) Ilia Topuria promised and fulfilled. After a lot of teasing the Australian Alexander Volkanovsky, the Spanish fighter knocked out the veteran in the second round and became the new king of the division that was once led by José Aldo.

With the 'challengers' hindsight' in their favor, Marlon Vera will take to the octagon in Miami (USA) to try for another victory over the American Sean O'Malley, just as happened in August 2020. The two athletes will compete for the bantamweight belt in the main fight of the UFC 299, which takes place next Saturday (09).
