So common for MMA and kickboxing fighters, the change of base from right-handed to left-handed during the fight is a movement rarely seen at the highest level of boxing and may have been precisely the point that culminated in the knockout suffered by Francis Ngannou against Anthony Joshua last Friday (8).
Joshua's trainer, Ben Davison, stated, in an appearance on the 'MMA Hour' podcast, that the former world boxing champion was properly prepared to capitalize on Ngannou's change of base, which, according to him, left the Cameroonian exposed to the right hand of the British.
“We knew he (Ngannou) would have difficulty defending himself if AJ (Joshua) did some things beforehand to set a certain scenario. He has difficulty defending his right hand when left-handed and that's what happened. I think it was a mistake on his part (the change of base), but I understand, as he has done this throughout his career”, analyzed the coach.
After the knockout, many questioned whether his chin Francis Ngannou, who had never been knocked out in his career, was in fact strong or had just never been tested.
“I don't think Francis doesn't have a good chin, but I also don't think he was as tested as people said he was. I think he's very tough and he showed that in the fight against Tyson Fury, but no matter how tough your chin is, when you get hit by punches you can't see from someone like Anthony Joshua, no chin can take it.”
