Despite winning the heavyweight belt (up to 120,2kg) at the beginning of 2023, Daniel Cormier still not convinced about the performance of Jon Jones in the division. In an interview with 'MMA Junkie', the former champion said that his eternal rival has not yet been tested long enough to show that he can continue performing at a high level in this category.

“Stipe hasn’t fought in four years. I don't know how you get back into the octagon and fight with the necessary effectiveness. One thing, however, and we don't know why Cyryl Gane Didn't test this as much as we thought: Jon Jones is it the same guy? We don't know that. We don't know if Jon Jones that's the guy he was when he was beating all those great fighters. We don't really have a sample size of who Jon Jones like a heavyweight and can you make a judgment based on that? I don’t know,” Cormier said.

In March 2023, Jones submitted the French Cyryl Gane quickly and, with just one fight in the division, he won the heavyweight belt. At the end of the same year, the MMA legend suffered a serious injury to his chest and needed to undergo two surgeries. The return of 'Bones', with no official date and location yet, should be against the former champion Stipe Miocic.
