End of invincibility
As tradition dictates, Despaigne quickly cornered Cortes-Acosta to seek the knockout, however, the Dominican showed why the sport is a mix of mixed martial arts and took down the Cuban giant. Waldo kept Despaigne pinned to the ground with punches and elbows using ground and pound.
In the final stretch of the round, Waldo tried an armbar but the Cuban survived the attacks. For the first time in his career, the Cuban giant reached the second round in professional MMA. In the second half, Despaigne returned more aggressive and tried to trap the Dominican against the fence.
Showing impressive tactical awareness, Cortes-Acosta lured Despaigne to the cage and quickly took down the Cuban again, who seemed to be unfamiliar with ground fighting. The Dominican got the mount and started punishing the taekwondo athlete with ground and pound until the end of the second half.
In the last part, Despaigne showed tiredness and seemed to have no strength for his excellent striking. On the other hand, Cortes showed heart and a lot of tactical intelligence to manage to take down the Cuban and punish him with ground and pound until the bell sounded.
