Boasting an impressive streak of 14 wins in the UFC octagon, including three lightweight title defenses (up to 70,3 kg), Islam Makhachev holds the number one position in the official pound-for-pound rankings of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, but that's not enough for Dana White to consider him the best fighter today.
In a press conference held after UFC 302 , Dana White vehemently defended the position that, as long as Jon Jones remains active, no other athlete will occupy the title of best pound-for-pound fighter. However, the president's opinion doesn't seem to have been well received by Makhachev.

The image posted by Makhachev shows the victories achieved by the two since 2021. On the Russian's side, eight names appear, including Charles Oliveira , Alexander Volkanovski (twice), and Dustin Poirier , while on Jones' side, only the triumph over Cyril Gane in 2023 is shown.
“Sorry,” Makhachev wrote about the image.
The biggest name in the history of the light heavyweight division (up to 93 kg), Jon Jones remained away from the octagon for more than three years between 2020 and 2023. Besides a contractual dispute with the UFC, 'Bones' used the hiatus to gain muscle mass and complete the definitive transition to heavyweight (up to 120,2 kg). Upon his return to competition, he won the belt in the new category by submitting Ciryl Gane.
