Leon Edwards reveals main objective after UFC 304 and shows interest in a 'fight of champions' again

The welterweight king expressed his desire to climb the pound-for-pound rankings and was open to a duel with Russian Islam Makhachev

Current welterweight champion (up to 77,1kg), Leon edwards He continues to prepare for his next belt defense, however, planning the next steps in his career. In an interview with 'Talk Sports MMA', the English fighter said that his main objective is to reach the top of the weight-for-pound rankings and was once again open to a possible confrontation with Islam makhachev.

“That’s my next goal (moving up the weight-for-weight rankings). Obviously, my first goal was to achieve the UFC title and now I have it. Now, I have to achieve another goal, which will make me get up in the morning to go out there and achieve what I'm trying to achieve: the numbers, the money and the top of the pound-for-pound rankings,” said Edwards.

The English fighter also commented again on a possible confrontation with Islam makhachev and was open to the possibility, however, he made a point of making some reservations.

“Of course, of course. I feel like we both have work to do within our division. I feel like Islam just faced his first lightweight (Dustin poirier). He fought Volkanovski, but this is the first lightweight he has faced as champion”, concluded the Englishman.

At UFC 304, which takes place on July 27th, Leon edwards will put his welterweight belt on the line for the third time. The Englishman's rival will be the North American Belal Muhammad |, in a rematch of a confrontation that ended in a 'no-contest' in 2021.
