Embittered by a tough setback in the main fight of UFC 304, Leon edwards said goodbye to the welterweight belt (up to 77,1kg.). Unsuccessful to deal with Belal Muhammad |, the Englishman was defended by his coach Dave Lovell, who revealed problems experienced by the pupil during preparation for his third title defense. Despite the statement, the coach ruled out any intention of 'making excuses'.
“As far as Leon is concerned, a lot of people don’t know this – and I’m not making excuses for him – but we had some problems in preparation. His back was bothering him. So, he couldn't fight the way he really needed to, offensively and defensively. We're not taking anything away from Belal's performance. He did well. The best man won on the night. But Leon will be back”, declared Dave Lovell in an interview with Submission Radio.

When delving deeper into the episode, Lovell stated that the choice was made by Edwards, who was uncomfortable with inactivity in the organization.
“I was very doubtful because these pains were lasting for about five weeks or more off and on. He had to go to a chiropractor (for) regular massages. But again, after one session, he was back to square one. But since he hadn't fought in a long time, Leon said he wanted to, so we just moved on from the injury, trained through the injury and tried to overcome it and get a win. Unfortunately, that never happened,” he concluded.
Overcome in a unanimous decision by the judges, Leon was dominated by Belal, who bet on grappling to dominate his rival. Despite his success in the category, the Englishman will not receive an immediate rematch if he depends on the Palestinian. Second new champion, a third fight could be held in three years.
