Just under a year after being dethroned by Sean Strickland and announce a career hiatus, Israel adesanya returns to the octagon on August 17th to try to regain the middleweight belt (up to 83,9 kg) against Dricus Du Plessis. The former champion guarantees that he can't wait to return to action and show that he is still the same athlete who dominated the category for years.
In an interview with 'MMA Junkie', Adesanya spoke about the lack of competition he feels and lamented the fact that he had to go through traditional press commitments before entering the Octagon.
"I missed. I definitely missed it. I missed all that sh*t. That's all I care about. The rest is stupid. The fight is already sold, but we have to go through all this press bullshit. We have to do another press conference. I think it's to increase interest in the fight. The staring, weighing, more staring. This whole thing is f***ing stupid to me. I just want to get in there and finish this guy off. That's what's exciting to me. But again, patience. And I’m a patient son of a bitch”, said the Nigerian.
Almost a year after being dominated by Sean Strickland, Israel adesanya He wants to prove to everyone, but mainly to himself, that he is still the same fighter he was before.
“Right now, what’s fueling me is showing myself. I am funny. I am performative. I'm a guy who goes in there and gets the job done. When I don't do this, I get angry. In the last fight it wasn't me, so I want to go out there and show who I am. I don't want to do this for anyone. I want to prove to myself that I'm still that guy. I know I am. Believe me”, he concluded.
