Gilbert Durinho speaks out after third straight UFC loss and issues retirement warning

Brazilian criticizes himself, says he was unable to 'let go' and promises changes after another UFC defeat

Saturday night (7) at ufc vegas 97 It was not at all pleasant for Gilbert Durinho. The Brazilian, who was already a challenger for the welterweight belt (up to 77kg), suffered his third consecutive defeat in the organization, this time to Sean brady, by unanimous decision of the judges. In a post-fight interview, he showed frustration with his performance and admitted that he was unable to impose his game.

“I’m a little disappointed. I know I have guts and can fight hard, but I couldn’t let go. I felt great all week, training went well and the morning of the fight went well too. But the fight didn’t flow, it just didn’t flow. He was fast and I could see his punches, I saw that he landed some good takedowns, but I couldn’t react,” analyzed Durinho.

The Brazilian acknowledged his opponent's qualities, but also analyzed his own mistakes. The fighter's main frustration, however, is not in the defeat itself, but in the inability to execute his game plan.

“Congratulations to Sean, he’s tough; I hit him with some good shots, but I think I forced the finish too much, you know? A lot of flying knees, big shots, but I couldn’t land them. I couldn’t let go of the game. I need to go back to the gym, talk to my coaches — that’s what bothers me the most, it’s not even the loss itself, but the fact that I still have something inside me — I’m going to watch this fight about 300 times today until we start to write down all the mistakes, go back to the gym and try to improve,” said the Niteroi native.

Will Durinho retire from the UFC?

The negative streak is the worst of Durinho's professional MMA career and raises questions about the future of the 38-year-old athlete. During the interview, the Brazilian was seen taking off his gloves, which fueled speculation about a possible retirement.

“I don’t know, that’s a good question — I hadn’t thought about it before the fight, so I need to rethink it, go back to my coaches and see what’s next. I’m going to go home, spend some time with my family and get back to training. Thank God I don’t have any injuries, I lost, but at least my body is fine… So I’m going to take some time off for my family, get back to training and see what the future holds,” he concluded.

The fight was marked by the superiority of Sean brady, who controlled the pace of the fight both in the exchange and on the ground. The American was more active and precise in his strikes, while Gilbert Durinho seemed slow and without ideas to reverse the situation.
