The debate over who is the best fighter in the world between Jon Jones e Islam makhachev gained a new chapter with an unusual proposal Chael Sonnen. On his YouTube channel, the former fighter suggested a different criterion to define superiority between the two athletes: which one would be the best teacher for an aspiring fighter.

“If you were going to make a top 10 list, and you had a kid you wanted to teach to fight, which one would you pick? Of course, that’s hypothetical, but knowing who would win in a hypothetical fight, with both weighing the same, is just as unrealistic,” Sonnen said.

For the American, the issue of each athlete's defeat must be analyzed differently. While Jones lost by disqualification, a situation considered atypical and controversial, Makhachev was defeated in a fight.

“Islam lost, but it was not a stroke of luck, and it would be unlikely to happen again,” he concluded.

Sonnen’s proposal opens a new debate about how to evaluate a fighter’s greatness. While statistics and results are important, the ability to pass on knowledge and shape the next generation of athletes can also be a determining factor.

Jon and Islam, by the way, do not have a fight scheduled. 'Bones' is considered to fight against Stipe Miocic, in November. The Russian is recovering from a broken hand and will only return to competition in 2025.
