Former UFC champion and Chael Sonnen heap praise on Alex Poatan: 'He's incredible'

Alex Poatán is right on the mark! The current light heavyweight champion (up to 93kg.) was recently praised by former UFC fighters Daniel Cormier e Chael Sonnen. The pair discussed the Brazilian's rise to MMA stardom on a recent episode of the show Good Guy / Bad Guy, on Youtube.

The two discussed the amount of achievements Poatan has achieved with the UFC, considering the Brazilian's short time in the organization. For them, it was an impressive campaign.

“I know we give Poatan a lot of praise here, Chael. But when you put it into perspective, he really only started three years ago, so as we were going to New York City, we have to go back to that night where you said, ‘Okay, he got a double knee [knocked out]’ but the guy never tried to take him down. My anticipation or expectation was that the next fight he would get a fighter who would take him down and then he would explode. That didn’t happen and I’m glad it didn’t happen because he’s incredible,” said former champion Cormier.

Sonnen also heaped praise on Poatan. The 'Oregon Gangster' recently made a comment on a photo posted by the Brazilian on social media: 'If you are in trouble and can choose only one person to save you, choose me. But if you can choose two, this guy can be useful,' he wrote.

“This is a sports story, it’s not just an MMA story. What Alex Poatán “He’s doing it at 37, Daniel. Two different divisions. He’s locked himself in as a future Hall of Famer,” Sonnen alleged.

Recently, rumors have surfaced that Poatan would be a last-minute option for the main event at UFC 310, who lost the main fight after the withdrawal of Belal Muhammad | of his title defense in the welterweight division (up to 77 kg.) against Shavkat Rakhmonov, due to a foot infection. However, the Brazilian is only expected to return to the UFC octagon in 2025.
