The recent declaration of Jon Jones pointing out Alex Poatán as a preferred target if it continues to be active after the UFC 309, this Saturday (9), led many 'haters' of the heavyweight champion (up to 120,2 kg) to the conclusion that he would be afraid of a possible meeting with the interim champion Tom aspinall. 'Bones' biggest rival in MMA, Daniel Cormier believes that such a conclusion is somewhat hasty.

In a video posted on his official YouTube channel, 'DC' stated that, although he believes that Jon Jones should indeed face Tom aspinall to unify the belts, doubts that 'fear' is a factor in question.

"Look, Jon Jones are not afraid of Tom aspinall. I wish people would stop saying that. He's not afraid of this guy. He's not afraid of anybody. I think he's just trying to be more strategic. He wants his legacy to live on. I don't think a potential loss to Tom aspinall “It would be so bad, but most people would expect a win. Ultimately, the old guard needs to be beaten by the new guard, unless you don’t do the sport the way everyone else does. Everyone does it that way, maybe Jones is different,” said the former UFC champion and current commentator.

Arguing about why you believe that Jon Jones should face Tom aspinall, Daniel Cormier used as an example the beginning of 'Bones' own career in the UFC.

“Shogun had to fight with Jon Jones back there. Rampage had to fight with Jon Jones back then. These guys were big names who faced him as a young champion and he built his name on those legends. He was already a legend in 2015, 2016, five years into the UFC because he beat all those giants. That’s how the sport works. Before Michael Jordan became what he was, he had to go through the Detroit Pistons. He had to go through the Boston Celtics. The old guard has to be passed by the new guard,” he concluded.
