What many expected came true: Alex Poatán was elected the 'Fighter of the Year' at the MMA Awards, the 'Oscars' of mixed martial arts. The light heavyweight champion (up to 93kg) had an impeccable year with three belt defenses against big names in the category: Jamahal hill, Jiri Prochazka e Khalil rountree. With such an unbeatable record, there is much speculation about a possible move by the Brazilian to the heavyweight division (up to 120,2 kg) to face the champion. Jon Jones.
Both fighters have already signaled that they want to trade blows inside the UFC octagon, but Poatan has one condition. After the awards ceremony, the light heavyweight champion revealed what he would like 'Bones' to do before the two fight: resolve his pending issue with the interim heavyweight champion, Tom aspinall.

“[Jones] has to get past Aspinall first. That’s his next challenge, but I think if he gets past Tom aspinall, it will be inevitable”, said the Brazilian fighter.
The soap opera between Jones and Aspinall has dominated the MMA media in the second half of 2024. But 'Bones' has always shown disinterest in fighting the legitimate number 1 contender for the UFC heavyweight title.
Instead of wanting to face the Brit, Jones has been trying his best to convince both MMA fans and the media that the fight they all want to see him face is against Poatan. A matchup between the two would undoubtedly be one of the biggest in UFC history, however, as many fans and Dana White are saying (and even Poatan), Jones vs. Aspinall should happen first.
