Francis Ngannou did not rule out the possibility of facing Jon Jones one day, but he is far from losing sleep over it. The former heavyweight champion (up to 120,2 kg) was very close to facing 'Bones' before trying his hand at boxing and later moving to the PFL, but the fight has never left the fans' imagination. According to the Cameroonian, the blame for the duel not happening lies with UFC president Dana White.
In an interview with 'Sportsbook', Ngannou said that a fight against Jon Jones It could happen, but the biggest obstacle to that would be Dana. However, he makes it clear that he doesn't care about that and is fine with the situation. The Cameroonian is following his life and his own goals at his own pace.
“I think it’s something that could potentially happen. If you can get past Dana White, it could happen. That’s a huge hurdle. But personally, I don’t care. I’m doing fine. I’m doing my thing at my own pace. I don’t care. It’s not going to change my sleep. It’s going to be fine,” Ngannou said.
Ngannou accuses UFC of using Jon Jones fight as a strategy to keep him in the organization
Ngannou explains that he tried to fight Jones for four years, but believes that the UFC used this possibility as a 'trump card' to bend him in negotiations. For the Cameroonian, the offer of the fight was a strategy by the organization to keep him in the UFC, and he felt cheated by it.
“I tried to fight against Jon Jones for four years, since I fought against Jairzinho Rozenstruik in 2020. I've been trying to fight against Jon Jones, and then they kept holding it like a trap until the moment I was about to leave. And then they said, 'Okay, here's the fight against Jon Jones'. But it was bait. I felt like they were very deceitful.”, concluded the PFL champion.
Francis Ngannou became UFC champion after knocking out Stipe Miocic in March 2021. After his first defense against Cyryl Gane, the Cameroonian gave up the belt and tried his luck in boxing, before returning to MMA and winning a title again, this time in the PFL.
Jon Jones, in turn, moved up to heavyweight after a long reign as light heavyweight champion (up to 93kg) and fought for the vacant title against Cyryl Gane. After finish the French in the first round, 'Bones' defended the belt against Stipe Miocic.
