Diego lopes acknowledged strategic failures and promised to seek the belt after being defeated by Alexander Volkanovsky in the fight for the featherweight title (up to 65,7 kg) in UFC 314 last Saturday (12), held at the Kaseya Center, in Miami (USA). In an interview while still in the octagon, he thanked the support of Brazilian and Mexican fans, but did not hide his frustration.
“First, I would like to thank all the people from Brazil, from Manaus. Especially the people from Mutirão, who are watching me. I’m sorry to disappoint you. I’ll come back stronger. The fighter, who had accumulated five consecutive victories before the setback, highlighted his opponent's experience and guaranteed that he will continue in the search for the belt.
“Nothing surprised me, because we knew Volkanovski was a great and experienced fighter. I failed a bit in the technical part. I think I should have been more aggressive, but I respect him. He deserves it. I'm going to be in the company for two years and I'm already here. I'll definitely fight for the belt soon. I'll be champion,” he concluded.
The duel was valid for the vacant title after Ilia Topuria move to lightweight. Diego knocked Volkanovski down with a right cross in the second round, had some good moments in the fight, but saw the Australian recover. After suffering with jabs and tactical control, the Brazilian was defeated by the judges' unanimous decision.
