This was the São Paulo native's first defeat in the Ultimate, who was on a streak of four wins in the organization, all by knockout.

In the fight, Ian Machado Garry abused the movement to make it difficult for players to enter Carlos Prates and always struck with great speed. The Irishman even risked a few takedown attempts to keep the Brazilian on his toes.

Prates still managed to recover in the second half and was close to a knockout in the fourth and, especially, in the fifth round, but Garry managed to survive and come away with the victory by the judges' decision.
