Fight Music Show President opens up about failed Popó vs Belfort attempt: 'He didn't want to'

Mamá Brito revealed that he personally tried to negotiate a fight between Acelino Popó and Vitor Belfort, but the former UFC champion refused the proposal

President of the Fight Music Show (FMS), Mamá Brito revealed that he tried to mediate a fight between Acelino Popó and Vitor belfort, but the former UFC champion refused the proposal. In an interview with the SUPER LUTAS program 'Mesa Redonda', the director stated that he personally met the fighter in Coconut Creek, in the United States, to negotiate the fight, without success.

According to Mamá, Belfort's resistance would be linked to an alleged distrust in the scope of the FMS, an event that combines sport and entertainment. The director, however, remains hopeful that the duel can be made possible in the future.

“People ask me a lot: 'Oh, Popó didn't want to fight with Vitor belfort'. No. I went there, sat in front of the Vitor belfort and he didn't want to. He thought we weren't as big as he deserves and that's okay. (…), we went to Coconut Creek to have dinner with him. It didn't get any better, but I'm always 'disturbing' him. One day it will come”, said Mamá Brito in an interview with SUPER LUTAS' 'Mesa Redonda'.

The clash between Popó and Belfort gained notoriety in April 2024, when the boxer from Bahia announced on social media that he would face the former UFC fighter in Fight Music Show 5. The statement, however, was quickly denied by Belfort, who accused his rival of 'popping up' and creating 'fake news' without the approval of his teams.

Belfort's refusal contrasts with the strategy of the FMS, which seeks to attract big names to expand its reach. Mamá Brito, in the interview, also expressed interest in taking José Aldo, a recently retired UFC legend, to face Popó.
