Charles of the Bronx expressed calm regarding the Ultimate's decision to appoint Arman Tsarukyan as a 'reserve' for the main fight of the UFC 317, scheduled for June 28, at the T-Mobile Arena (USA). However, the Brazilian avoided saying that the reserve status guarantees the Armenian the next opportunity for the title. The former lightweight champion (up to 70,3 kg.) faces Ilia Topuria in the main fight for the vacant belt.
In an interview with 'MMA Junkie', the former champion of the category highlighted the extreme competitiveness of the division and revealed prior lack of knowledge about Tsarukyan's choice, but accepted the UFC's decision.

“I didn’t know he was the backup, but if that’s what the UFC decided, then that’s what we’re going to do. He’s also a great guy and a great opponent. So, we’ll see,” said the São Paulo native.
The relationship between the two fighters has a recent history. Tsarukyan, currently ranked number 1 in the lightweight division, defeated Charles Oliveira in a split decision in UFC 300, in April 2024. The victory earned him a shot at the then champion Islam makhachev No. UFC 311, in January of this year.
However, a back injury suffered during the weigh-in process forced his last-minute exit, replaced by the Brazilian Renato Moicano. The episode generated discontent among UFC leaders, with Dana White declaring that the Armenian would need 'one more victory' to return to the title fight.

The designation as a reserve of the UFC 317, therefore, is seen as a strategy by Tsarukyan to rebuild his image in the eyes of the company's management. Despite the symbolism of Tsarukyan's position, the Brazilian emphasized that the path to the belt remains open to multiple candidates. Justin gaethje, former interim champion, and Max Holloway, current holder of the symbolic BMF (Most Tough) belt, are pushing for a chance. The Hawaiian, in particular, could strengthen his candidacy if he wins Dustin poirier at UFC 318 in July. The 'BMF' title is of interest to Charles.
