Alex Poatán could be facing a major challenge in the UFC's light heavyweight division (up to 93 kg). Khamzat Shimaev, that became champion of the middleweights (up to 83,9 kg) in the UFC 319, is eyeing a possible superfight against the Brazilian.
In an interview with 'Redcorner MMA', Khamzat Shimaev made it clear that his desire is to move up to the light heavyweight division, to face Alex Poatán and win his second belt. According to the Chechen, the Brazilian's style is quite favorable to him, and, furthermore, he doesn't fear the Pataxó in the exchange of strength.

“If you ask me, of course I want to fight for the second belt. For me, it’s no secret, the guy (Alex Poatán) now weighs 93 kilos, if you don't trade blows with him standing up, he's a very convenient opponent for me. Everyone says he's a very strong guy, but I've never been outmatched in anything related to strength," said Chimaev.
Despite the desire to move up a category to fight for a new belt, Khamzat Shimaev He said he doesn't mind if the UFC wants him to defend the middleweight belt, as long as he gets paid well.
"I wanted to fight in '93, but I don't care if they give me Nassourdine, De Ridder, or Hernandez. I really don't care, as long as they pay me well," concluded the Chechen.
Undefeated, with 15 career wins, nine of which were in the UFC, Khamzat Shimaev carries the status of “bogeyman” of the middleweight division, as only three of his triumphs were by decision, six by submission and six by knockout.
Alex Poatán, on the other hand, has a career with 13 wins (10 in the UFC) and only three losses. The Brazilian's resume is impressive, as 11 of his triumphs were by knockout, six of which were in fights valid for the Ultimate title.
