Islam Makhachev already has his favorite to be the first challenger in the Ultimate's welterweight division (up to 77kg). The Russian dominated Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 322, held last Saturday (15), and won his second belt in the organization. Now, aiming to make history, he wants to face a legend of the division.

In an interview with the UFC after his victory at UFC 322, Islam Makhachev praised Carlos Prates and Michael Morales , who are contenders for the title shot. However, he stated that he would prefer to face former champion Kamaru Usman in his first title defense.

“I still think Kamaru can defeat Morales and Prates. Kamaru is the strongest name. They are young and ambitious, but Kamaru remains dangerous and one of the best in this game. If I were given the option and asked who I would like to fight, I would say Kamaru,” said Islam Makhachev.

Who will confront Islam Makhachev?

Despite Islam Makhachev 's interest in facing Kamaru Usman , the fight for the number one contender spot in the welterweight division is one of the most fiercely contested in the entire UFC.

Besides Carlos Prates and Michael Morales , who won by knockout at UFC 322 and should appear in the top 5 in the next ranking update, Ian Garry will face Belal Muhammad next Saturday (22), in a crucial duel for the category. Meanwhile, Shavkat Rakhmonov , who returns from injury, and Ilia Topuria , lightweight champion (up to 70,3kg), are outside contenders in the dispute.
