Carlos Prates is aware that he might not be fighting for the belt in his next UFC fight. After knocking out Leon Edwards , the Fighting Nerds smoker became one of the favorites to challenge Islam Makhachev for the title . However, faced with strong competition, the Brazilian recognizes that he could miss his chance, and even sees a positive side to it.
In an interview with 'ConnectCast', Carlos Prates stated that, internally, he feels the competition to face Islam Makhachev is between him and Kamaru Usman . Even so, he admitted he's in no hurry and that, if he's not chosen, it might even be something better for his career.

"I think that inside me, there's 50% me and 50% Kamaru, in my opinion. Of course, my heart wants me, but I'm not in a hurry. If it doesn't happen, it's even better," said Carlos Prates.
Carlos Prates also highlighted his confidence that he could knock out Islam Makhachev , pointing to a devastating blow as the only realistic way to beat the champion. He assessed that, in a fight against the Dagestani fighter, he would spend most of the time being pressured on the ground, leaving only a few minutes standing to inflict sufficient damage.
“I have a lot of faith that I can go there and knock Islam out, which I think is the only way to beat him, because it’s impossible by points. Fighting Islam is like this: 18 minutes of getting beaten up on the ground and seven minutes standing. (I have to) hurt him so that every time I’m standing, he’s desperate to grab me and sometimes even misses, you know?” concluded the Fighting Nerds smoker.
