Since Dana White announced the event would take place on the lawn of the US presidential residence, the Irishman's name has been frequently speculated among fans as the protagonist of a triumphant return to the octagon. However, for the former fighter and current commentator, 'Notorious' McGregor's absence from the card may mark the exhaustion of his ability to generate public expectation.
During an episode of the show 'Good Guy/Bad Guy', Sonnen expressed skepticism about McGregor's presence at the event and raised doubts about how long the Irishman will still be able to sustain the comeback narrative. In the commentator's view, after years of promising to return to fighting, a possible White House event without his participation could definitively weaken this strategy, making each new promise less convincing to the public.

Daniel Cormier , for his part, was even more direct in linking the event's historic success to McGregor's presence. According to the former champion, the White House card has the potential to be the biggest in UFC history, regardless of one's opinion of the Irishman. However, he believes this status would only be achieved with McGregor in action, as his participation would be the element capable of transforming a major event into something truly unprecedented.
“If he doesn’t go to the White House, it’s over. Because here’s the thing: love him or hate him, like him or not, the White House card is going to be the biggest card we’ve ever had, but it can only be the biggest card you’ve ever seen if Conor McGregor is on it. It’s going to be a star-studded card, it’s going to be an incredible card, but the only way it can be the biggest card we’ve ever seen is if Conor McGregor is there,” Daniel Cormier replied.
