Khabib Nurmagomedov surprised everyone again by naming a fighter he believes has the potential to become UFC champion. Outside of the organization, Muhammad Mokaev received praise from the undefeated former lightweight champion (up to 70,3kg), who highlighted wrestling as his main advantage.

During an appearance on the Russian podcast Smol Talk, Islam Makhachev 's coach explained that Mokaev's main quality is his high level of grappling. According to the UFC Hall of Famer, grappling remains the most decisive factor in MMA, allowing the fighter to control the pace of the fight and dictate where it will take place.

“If they give Mokaev a chance, he will also be champion. He is also a wrestler. When you have wrestling experience, you control the course of the fight. Wrestling will always be dominant,” Khabib declared.

The statement reinforces the former lightweight champion's admiration for Mokaev's fighting style, which he built on wrestling and grappling. Considered for years one of the top prospects in the flyweight division, the Briton gained notoriety for his ability to control opponents on the ground and impose his rhythm throughout the fights.

Even though his career is currently uncertain, Mokaev is still considered by experts to be an athlete with the potential to reach the top if he returns to the UFC. Khabib believes that the combination of technique, intelligence, and elite ground fighting could be enough to transform the Briton into a future champion of the event should he be given the opportunity to return.

Mokaev's record in the UFC

Muhammad Mokaev had an undefeated run in the UFC before leaving the organization. The Briton debuted in the Ultimate Fighting Championship in March 2022 at UFC London and quickly drew attention for his wrestling-based style, ground control, and great finishing ability.

For the world's largest MMA organization, the Briton fought seven times and won them all, accumulating important victories in the flyweight division. Among his main wins are names like Tim Elliott , Alex Perez and Manel Kape , in addition to four submission victories.

Mokaev's last appearance for the event was in July 2024, when he defeated Manel Kape by unanimous decision at UFC 304. The result kept the athlete undefeated in professional MMA, with an overall record of 12 wins accumulated up to that point.
