Historic! Islam Makhachev defeats Ian Garry and breaks Anderson Silva's record at UFC 330.

Long live the king! Islam Makhachev went through some problems, but managed to defend the welterweight belt (up to 77,1 kg) by defeating Ian Machado Garry by unanimous decision in the main fight of UFC 330 , in the early hours of this Sunday (16), in Philadelphia. With the result, the Russian managed to overcome his first challenger in the new division, in addition to becoming the second athlete to defeat the Irishman.

The victory represents the breaking of one of the longest-standing records in Ultimate history. This was Makhachev's 17th consecutive win in the world's largest MMA organization, surpassing the record of the legendary Anderson Silva , who won 16 fights between 2006 and 2012.

The two fighters began the confrontation studying each other in the center of the octagon. While Makhachev feinted takedown attempts, Garry tried to use his superior reach to land jabs and straight punches. The Russian went for a takedown in the first minute, and after some resistance from Garry, managed to complete the takedown and pin the challenger against the cage. From there, Islam began attacking with knees to the thigh, but without causing significant damage to the Irishman. In response, Ian began attacking his rival's forearms with short elbows. Thus, the first round came to an end.

In the second round, Garry initiated the exchange with a high kick, which Makhachev blocked. The Irishman also landed a powerful kick to the midsection, and subsequently the two clashed in the center of the octagon, with the Russian landing a knee to the midsection. However, the champion's best moment came after the two separated. Makhachev landed a powerful head kick, taking Garry to the ground. The challenger got up, but was taken down with a hip throw and spent the following minutes being controlled on the ground.

The third round presented a different scenario. Clearly more tired, Makhachev struggled to take his opponent down. In contrast, Garry showed increasing confidence, posing a threat with high kicks and landing good kicks to the Russian's midsection, as well as several knee strikes. By the end of the round, the Irishman was looking much better in the fight.

The fight became tense again in the striking exchanges at the beginning of the fourth round. After absorbing some strong kicks to the midsection, Islam managed to briefly take his opponent down. The two exchanged blows against the cage, and despite attacking the Russian's body with short punches to the body and face, Garry ended up being taken down several times. At the end of the round, Makhachev returned to his corner with a small nosebleed.

The fifth round saw a more aggressive Garry, aware of the need for a stoppage to secure the victory. After landing strong kicks to the midsection and injuring the champion's ribs, the Irishman was knocked down against the cage. As in previous attempts, he quickly got back to his feet. However, he was taken down once again and saw Makhachev transition to his back, maintaining the position until the end of the round. Although he wasn't in danger of being submitted, he couldn't escape the position.

Thus, at the end of the 25-minute fight, two judges scored it 49-46 while the other scored it 48-47 for Islam Makhachev . In the post-fight interview inside the octagon with Joe Rogan, he praised his opponent's skill, whom he defined as a great fighter and a great man, but said he had proven once again that he is the best in the world.
