Matt Brown believes Alex Poatan needs to be strategic in his next move to avoid compromising his sporting relevance in the heavyweight division (up to 120,2 kg). The Brazilian debuted in the category at UFC Casa Branca and was knocked out by Ciryl Gane , a result that brought him close to a fight against Josh Hokit . For the veteran, however, the duel would not be a good choice for the Brazilian.

In a statement to MMA Fighting, Matt Brown assessed that Hokit does not represent an interesting matchup for Poatan at this time. In the former fighter's view, facing an opponent of that caliber so soon after a loss to Gane could put the Brazilian in a delicate situation in his career.

“ Josh Hokit isn’t a great matchup for him… If you lose to Cyril Gane and then you’re fighting Josh Hokit , that’s not a great situation to be in,” said Matt Brown.

Brown also warned of the consequences of another defeat. According to the veteran, a second consecutive loss in the heavyweight division could significantly harm Poatan's trajectory in the division, regardless of the winning record the Brazilian previously built in the light heavyweight division (up to 93 kg).

“If Alex loses again, what will that do for his career? I know what he did at light heavyweight, it was incredible, but he’s a heavyweight now, that shit is in the past. You’re a heavyweight now,” the veteran concluded.

Johnny Walker opens up about his heavyweight debut at UFC 332.
