UFC 296 welterweight title challenger Colby Covington stated that he suffered a serious foot injury early in his fight against champion Leon Edwards last Saturday (December 16th) in Las Vegas. In an interview on the PBD podcast , the American said he broke his foot when Edwards' elbow blocked his first kick of the fight.
“I broke my foot in the first 30 seconds of the fight, which people don't know yet – the X-rays are going to start coming out. The first minute of the fight. I have the photo on my cell phone, of the exact moment it landed on his elbow. You feel like you are swelling. At the end of the first round you are like a man who hurts. Normally I sit on the stool and I didn't want to sit on the stool. It landed right on the right elbow, on the top of the foot,” revealed Covington.

Despite the injury, Covington continued in the fight and took Edwards to a unanimous decision from the judges, who gave the Brit victory 49-46 on all cards. It was the Englishman's second title defense, which extended his unbeaten run to 13 fights in the UFC. The American, in turn, suffered his third defeat in title fights in the organization.
UFC 296 was the last event of 2023 and featured other notable fights, such as the first title defense of Brazilian Alexandre Pantoja , who defeated Brandon Royval by unanimous decision in the co-main event, and the star performance of Paddy Pimblett , who defeated Tony Ferguson also by unanimous decision.
