Charles do Bronx opened up about the injury that forced him to postpone his fight against Beneil Dariush , which was scheduled for May at UFC . In an interview on the "Connect Cast" podcast, the Brazilian explained that he suffered a rib fracture during training and that he needed courage to request the postponement of the fight, which could have determined the next challenger for the lightweight title (up to 70,3kg).

“I trained for about 10 days with a messed up rib, and Daniel Willycat called me aside and said to me: 'You don't need to prove anything to anyone. Are you going to fight like that? You can't take a beating.' He hit me in the ribs, and I felt it a lot. I went home, cried, called Diego Lima, and we called the UFC. I explained the injury, that I couldn't take a beating, and asked them to reschedule. I couldn't make another mistake. If I made another mistake, it would be two consecutive losses, and they would say I was 'finished',” the São Paulo native recounted.

Charles Oliveira said he was afraid of losing the opportunity to fight for the title, since he was coming off a loss to Islam Makhachev last October, when he lost the belt for failing to make weight.

The fight between Charles Oliveira and Beneil Dariush was rescheduled for 30 days later, at UFC 289 , and ended with a spectacular knockout by the Brazilian in the first round. With the victory, the Brazilian recovered from his previous defeat and now awaits the announcement of the next challenger for the belt.
