As the year draws to a close, it's safe to say that 2023 was a special season for MMA fans, who not only had to say goodbye to great legends of the sport , but also witness several historical records being broken over the past few months by names like Charles do Bronx and Tom Aspinall.
In a video published on its official YouTube channel (see above), the UFC highlighted the main records broken by athletes in the octagon during the year 2023.

Charles Oliveira , the UFC record holder for submissions and stoppages, reached another historic milestone in 2023. By submitting Beneil Dariush in the first round at UFC 298 , the Brazilian received his 19th post-fight bonus in his UFC career, taking the sole lead in this category. Previously, Oliveira shared the lead with Donald Cerrone.

If the UFC submission record belongs to Charles Oliveira , the knockout record belongs to heavyweight (up to 120,2 kg) Derrick Lewis . His latest victim was Brazilian Marcos Silva , who became the 14th fighter knocked out by Lewis in the octagon. The 'Black Beast' once again left welterweight (up to 77,1 kg) Matt Brown behind in the race for the lead.

With his lightning-fast knockout of Sergei Pavlovich to win the interim heavyweight title in 1 minute and 09 seconds, Tom Aspinall became the fighter with the shortest average time per fight in Ultimate history, taking an average of 2 minutes and 10 seconds to complete his challenges in the octagon.

In addition to 'breaking the bank' by defeating the heavily favored and undefeated Yazmin Jauregui at UFC 290 , Denise Gomes did so faster than any other fighter in the history of the strawweight division (up to 52,1kg). The knockout in 20 seconds made the Brazilian the holder of the record for the fastest finish in the history of the lightest category in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Until 2023, only one year had featured more than one knockout by slam in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) octagon. UFC Austin decided to 'double down' and promote two of these knockouts not only on the same card, but in consecutive fights.
In the preliminary card, Drakkar Klose knocked out Joe Solecki with a slam, and then watched Cody Brundage do the same to Zachary Reese.
