Speculated to participate in the UFC 300, Dricus Du Plessis opened the game and explained the reason for denying Dana White's invitation. New middleweight champion (up to 83,9kg.) the South African claimed to have had problems with injuries and regretted having been forced to not be able to attend one of the biggest events in the organization's history.

“I wasn't able to train, because with a broken foot, it stays still, I couldn't train. So now you want me to have a six week training camp to fight in UFC 300. Against one of the best people to ever do it. I don't think people understand what it would mean to fight at 300, to be the main event. This is life changing. I refused to fight. It was with a heavy heart that I had to refuse the UFC 300, because it’s an incredible privilege to be headlining this card,” said Du Plessis on the podcast Shadow Banned.

By continuing his speech, Du Plessis reduced the financial importance of accepting the proposal.

“But even talking about the financial side, for people who are wondering, I didn't want any more money. The money they offered me was great. For me, it's a question of legacy. To go there, after performing the way I've been performing, to go there and not be 100%, and people say, “Why aren't you taking the risk? I took the risk in every fight. I got injured in some fights, especially the fight against Whittaker. Just starting to fight, I've already fought three times in seven months. That’s taking a risk,” he concluded.
