Chimaev suggests xenophobia and denounces UFC in controversy: 'I was born in the wrong country'

Chechen compares the situation with Colby Covington and says he should have fought for the title 'a long time ago'

In the octagon, Khamzat Shimaev It's a hungry wolf looking for prey. Outside of it, however, the Chechen fighter seems dissatisfied with suggesting an even more challenging enemy: prejudice. In an outburst on social media, he accused the UFC of xenophobia, claiming that their talent and achievements are not recognized because of their origin.

Chimaev's fury was intensified by a refusal from the UFC in granting the fighter a title shot. Undefeated in 13 MMA fights, he overcame names like Gilbert Durinho e Kamaru Usman, in achievements that accredit him as one of the main candidates for the title in welterweight (up to 77kg.) and middleweight (up to 83,9kg.). However, according to the fighter, the path to the top is blocked by an invisible wall of prejudice.

“I should have fought for a title a long time ago, but I was born in the wrong country,” Chimaev said on his social media. “If I were North American, it would be different”, compared the fighter, drawing a parallel with the trajectory of Colby covington, a rival that enjoys greater visibility and opportunities in the organization.

Chimaev's refusal to face Leon edwards No. UFC 300, alleging religious reasons, also fueled the controversy. The fighter, who follows Ramadan, chose to preserve his faith, even if it meant giving up a golden opportunity.


Despite the challenges and criticism, Khamzat does not bow down. On June 22nd, at UFC Saudi Arabia, he will have the chance to prove his worth once again, in a duel against the former division champion, Robert whittaker.
