Poatan and Adesanya have a history of rivalry dating back to their kickboxing days, where the Brazilian won both clashes between them, one by knockout and one by points. In Ultimate, the pupil of Glover Teixeira won the first confrontation, in November 2022, and opened 3-0 on the 'general score', however, in April of the following year, the Nigerian adopted the 'he who laughs last, laughs best' approach, returning the knockout to the then champion middleweight and said he was no longer interested in a new fight.
