Last Saturday (27), during the UFC Las Vegas 91, North American reporter Charly Arnolt made history by becoming the first woman to act as an 'announcer' at an Ultimate event. For a very short time, however, the feat almost didn't happen.

In a post on social media, Arnold detailed the behind the scenes that led her to announce two of the last three fights of the UFC Las Vegas 91. According to the reporter, a producer contacted her to replace Joe Martinez, who was facing problems with his voice, but her initial reaction was to refuse the call.

“One of my producers came in and said, 'Hey, Joe Martinez, the Octagon announcer, is sick, his voice is cracking. He doesn't know if he will be able to make the next announcements. Could you do this?' I was like, 'Sorry, what are you asking me?' He said, 'Listen, if you're not comfortable, you can say so, but we need to decide really quickly because time is short. So I said, 'I have to be honest, I don't know if I'm comfortable doing this.'

“Why did I say that? Because obviously I was scared of ruining a national TV spot. I never had this responsibility with the UFC and I was scared. So I said, 'I don't think I can do it.' He said, 'OK, fair enough, let's figure it out' and left,” Arnolt reported.

When she received the proposal, Arnolt, who already had experience as an occasional announcer for WWE, a professional wrestling event, was in the dressing room accompanied by two makeup artists from the organization, who gave her the necessary 'push' to go back and accept the challenge.

“They looked at me and said, 'What's wrong with you? Of course you can. You are super talented. You are a professional. Why would you say you are uncomfortable? You need to do this.' I was super nervous, but I thought, 'You're right, I have to do this. I can't back down when the team needs me.' So when the producer came by again, I said, 'If you need me, I can do it. I’m fine,’” said the reporter.

After receiving instructions and help from production and Joe Martinez himself, Charly Arnolt went up to the UFC octagon to announce the victory of Karina Silva about Ariane Lipski da Silva and also the co-main fight of the event, between Ryan spann e Bogdan Guskov, before Joe Martinez recovered and returned for the night's main event.

"I was like, 'Oh God, I did it!' I was in a bit of a state of shock. Then obviously, I had to continue doing this and I received a lot of help from the team”, he concluded.
