On the 1th of June, Islam makhachev defends the lightweight belt (up to 70,3 kg) for the third time against the former interim champion Dustin poirier, in the main fight of the UFC 302, in Newark, New Jersey, in the United States. Although he is almost a 5 to 1 favorite, the Russian was advised by a former champion not to underestimate the American.

In a recent edition of the 'Pound 4 Pound' podcast, with Henry Cejudo, the former welterweight champion (up to 77,1 kg) Kamaru Usman pointed to the possibility of the 'Diamante' surprising and coming out with the victory over Islam makhachev.

“If I were a gambler, I don’t like the fact that Dustin poirier get a new chance. If you let someone stand at the door of the club long enough telling them they can't get in, if you leave them long enough, they'll find a way to get in. He'll find a way. I think they gave him that opportunity. I'm not saying it will happen, but we could see something incredible”, said the Nigerian.

In Usman's opinion, if there is someone capable of surprising and 'breaking the bank', it is someone who goes by the name of Dustin poirier.

“It won't be the first time we've been surprised by a 'zebra'. Someone like Poirier is very capable of achieving this”, he concluded.
