On the eve of the third title defense of Islam makhachev, Javier Mendez, coach of the lightweight champion (up to 70,3 kg.) exudes total confidence for his pupil's duel against Dustin poirier. In the renowned coach's view, the Russian athlete can 'do whatever he wants' against the challenger for the category belt. The clash takes place this Saturday (1) in Newark (USA).

“Islam has everything. How he wants to win, when he wants to win, where he wants to win is up to him. We can take the fight wherever we want. This is the difference between Islam and Khabib. Khabib’s main goal was wrestling, but Islam can do whatever he wants,” declared Javier in an interview with Hablemos MMA.

As he continued his speech, Javier recalled his pupil's performance in a rematch against Alexander Volkanovsky and reinforced the power that the athlete will have against Poirier.

“See what happened against Volkanovski, he beat him in striking. If people think that Islam can only win if it takes the fight to the ground, they are wrong. That's not how it has to happen. Islam can do whatever it wants. I won't say what we have planned for the fight, but I can say that Islam can do whatever he wants. Strikes or ground game, we can do it all,” he concluded.
