New UFC gloves promise to combat eye pokes and protect fighters; understand how they work

Equipment will be used at UFC 302, next Saturday; Makhachev exposes fears

In the midst of a season marked by criticism and heated debates about athlete safety, the UFC presents an innovation that promises to revolutionize the octagon: new gloves for its fighters. The debut of the equipment, dubbed '3Eight' and '5Eight', is scheduled for edition 302, which takes place next Saturday, June 1st, in Newark, New Jersey.

The initiative, announced after the official weigh-in of the UFC 300, appears as a response to the frequent occurrences of fingerprints on the eyes and broken hands.

The new gloves, developed in partnership with 3Eight, feature a lighter, thinner and ergonomic design, seeking to reduce excess space on the outside of the hand and eliminate seams that can cause cuts and abrasions.

In addition, the model features ten unisex sizes, and reinforced padding on the index and little fingers for greater protection. Despite the promise of reducing dangers inside the cage, the new gloves are not unanimous among fighters.

Makhachev is wary of the new UFC gloves

The lightweight champion (up to 70,3kg.) of the organization, Islam makhachev, expressed his reservations in an interview with the 'Sport24' channel on YouTube, pointing to a possible 'side effect'. He debuts the equipment against Dustin poirier in the main fight of the night.

“The gloves are very stiff and, as I said, will cause more cuts. Previous gloves were softer, while these are stiffer. They don't allow you to open your hand completely to ensure your fingers aren't pointing forward, but overall they're basically the same thing.” said Islam.
