This Saturday (1), Dustin poirier, tries, for the third time in his career, to win the linear lightweight belt (up to 70,3 kg) when he faces the champion Islam makhachev in the main fight of UFC 302. Despite arriving at the duel as a big underdog in the bookmakers, the 'Diamante' has, in the opinion of another Ultimate veteran, a well-designed path to surprise and win the title.

Light heavyweight athlete (up to 93 kg), Anthony Smith, who also works as a UFC commentator and analyst, pointed out, during his appearance on the 'MMA Hour' podcast, the path he believes the challenger should follow to surprise Makhachev and win the lightweight belt.

“I think Poirier has a better chance than many believe. I think he's in a good moment. I think there are a lot of comparisons between Khabib and Islam, but they are very different fighters. The biggest difference is that Islam is willing to stand and trade with Dustin and that gives Dustin a lot of opportunities to do well, especially if Dustin connects early and gets Islam a little nervous and respecting him enough to avoid getting into range. I think we’ll know early on,” he said.

Islam makhachev e Dustin poirier face each other for the lightweight belt in the main fight of the UFC 302, this Saturday (1), in Newark, New Jersey.
