A blow of fate, or rather a blow during training, cost her dearly. Charles of the Bronx. Just a few days away from fighting for a rematch against Islam makhachev for the lightweight belt (up to 70,3kg.) in the UFC 294, in October 2023, the Brazilian suffered a deep cut in the eyebrow during a training session, which forced him to withdraw from the fight.

The injury, in addition to postponing his dream of a rematch, had a significant financial impact on the Brazilian. According to Sean Shelby, UFC matchmaker, Do Bronx stopped pocketing US$2 million (about R$10,7 million) because of the cut.

The frustration with the situation was evident. Dana White, president of UFC, did not hide his displeasure upon learning of Charles' injury, mainly because it happened in training without proper protection. The manager even criticized the Brazilian for choosing to spar without a helmet one day before the trip to Abu Dhabi.

With the position open, Charles of the Bronx was replaced by Alexander Volkanovsky. The Australian, however, was no match for Islam makhachev, who won the fight via unanimous decision by the judges and established himself as lightweight champion.
