The climate in UFC heats up with the rise of Alex Poatán as light heavyweight champion (up to 93kg.). The Brazilian, known for his devastating striking, collects knockouts and has been winning over fans around the world. However, Islam makhachev, current lightweight champion (up to 70,3kg), is not convinced of Poatan's supremacy and questions his dominance in the category.

In an interview with former fighter and commentator Daniel Cormier, Makhachev harshly criticized the Brazilian. He questions Poatan's ability to adapt to other areas of MMA, such as grappling, and challenges him to face fighters with more complete styles, such as Magomed Ankalayev.

The debate began when Cormier praised Poatan's strength, stating that, if the Brazilian dedicated himself to wrestling, he could become Olympic champion in just two years. Makhachev vehemently disagreed, arguing that Poatan's experience was limited to striking and that he would be easily dominated by wrestling-based fighters such as wrestling standout Sadulaev Tazhudinov or Ankalaev himself.

“You don’t even believe that. How can someone who is a striker go to wrestler and become an Olympic champion in two years? As? (…) he only fights with strikers. Put him to fight Ankalaev. It will be knocked down easily. Who did he win from? Prochazka, Blachowicz… Blachowicz is a wrestler, but Ankalaev x Blachowicz: what happened? How many times did Ankalaev knock him down? The issue is another level,” said Islam.

Makhachev doesn't like Poatan?

Makhachev's criticisms resonate in the MMA community and generate speculation about a possible rivalry between the two champions. After all, Poatan has established himself as one of the most feared fighters in the organization, and Islam, in turn, is considered one of the biggest names in lightweight history.
