In a publication that set social media on fire and sparked speculation among fans of MMA, the former UFC lightweight champion (up to 70,3kg), Charles of the Bronx, left an enigma in the air by sharing a photo in front of the Etihad Arena, in Abu Dhabi, the place of his defeat to Islam makhachev in October 2022.

The caption 'My next stop is the world' was enough to trigger a wave of theories about the Brazilian fighter's future. In the comments of the post, several followers interpreted the message as a foreshadowing of the long-awaited rematch against Makhachev.

Charles occupies second place in the lightweight rankings and is coming off a defeat to Arman Tsarukyan in April this year. Tsarukyan, in turn, was considered as the next challenger for Makhachev's belt, but the Nevada Athletic Commission's recent nine-month suspension for punching a fan took him out of contention, opening up a window for Charles' return to the running. .

The first battle between Charles and Makhachev, in October 2022, ended with the Russian's victory by submission in the second round, making him champion of the category.

The rematch was scheduled for UFC 294, in October 2023, in the same location as the original fight. However, fate played a trick on Charles, who suffered an eyebrow injury a few days before the fight and was replaced by Alexander Volkanovsky.
