Current interim heavyweight champion (up to 120,2kg.), Tom aspinall successfully defended its position against Curtis blaydes, but ended any chance of facing another prospect in the category. According to the fighter, his next appearance will only be to compete for the division's linear title, currently in the hands of Jon Jones, which must defend against Stipe Miocic in November.
“I don’t know what will happen next. This is not in my hands. All I know is that my next fight will be for a linear title. That's it. I won't do anything else. In my next fight, I will fight anyone, as always, as I have done my entire career, you can ask any of the UFC matchmakers this, but at the moment, I am the best UFC heavyweight in the world and I will fight for a straight title next,” Aspinall told MMA fighting.
Despite his stance, the fighter didn't mind making himself available to be the 'reserve' for Jones and Miocic, if either athlete is prevented from fighting at the end of 2024.
“Yes, I will be there. I'll do it. I would fight these guys in an hour if they needed me. Listen, I could beat both of these guys, no problem. If I have to do it in one day, I can do it. Easily. So I’ll be there and I’ll take the opportunity if it comes,” Aspinall said about being the reserve fighter.
Expecting to face Jon Jones, Aspinall counts on Dana White's optimism about an eventual confrontation. In the president's view, it is very difficult for the North American not to want to face the Englishman if he defeats Miocic. On the other hand, the president announced the Croatian's retirement after the next fight.
