The August MMA calendar has come to an end, but not before giving mixed martial arts fans a show of memorable submissions in the UFC octagon.
With that in mind, the team at SUPER FIGHTS got together to choose the three best finishes of the eighth month of the year. Here's the list:
3rd: Valter Walker vs. Junior Tafa – UFC 305
Protagonists of a real truck crash in the octagon, Walter Walker e Junior Tafa decided to show up ready to give their all in the fight. After resisting the pressure imposed by the Australian at the beginning of the fight and almost being knocked out, the Brazilian chose to take the fight to the ground and use his jiu-jitsu in an offensive and fatal way. In the last second of the first round, Johny Walker's brother applied an ankle lock and forced the referee to stop the fight.
2nd: Dricus du Plessis x Israel Adesanya – UFC 305
In a duel valid for the linear middleweight belt (up to 83,9 kg), Dricus and Israel generated a great climate of tension during a fierce confrontation in Perth, Australia. Despite the fatigue shown in the fourth round, the South African lived up to his status as champion, surprising with his recovery power and taking the Nigerian to the ground after applying a hard blow that shook his rival. Without giving the challenger a chance to get up, Du Plessis applied a rear naked choke and retained the title after the athlete tapped out.
1st: Gerald Meerschaert x Edmen Shahbazyan – UFC Vegas 96
A big underdog in the bookmakers' minds, Gerald agreed to compete in a clash of styles against his compatriot Shahbazyan. With an eye on increasing the number of victims with his skills in the gentle art, the veteran overcame the chaos generated by his rival, eliminated any chance of giving in to the bad moment he was experiencing in the fight and punished the 'golden boy' with his experience and effectiveness in jiu-jitsu. At 36 years old, 'GM3' overcame Anderson Silva in number of victories in the middleweight division and achieved 11 triumphs by submission in his career in the UFC.
