Bellator lightweight champion (up to 70,3 kg), Usman Nurmagomedov has never been defeated in nearly 20 professional MMA fights. However, in October 2023, the Russian was caught in a doping test after beating Brent Primus in the three hundredth edition of the event. Due to the episode, he was suspended for six months by the California Athletic Commission (CSAC), in addition to being fined US$ 50 thousand (R$ 28 thousand at the current rate).
In November, the fighter declared that he had been contaminated by consuming medicines with a medical prescription and not communicating it to the entity. This Thursday (29), in an interview with the North American website 'MMA Junkie', Nurmagomedov reaffirmed his position.
“If it was a steroid, they would have to say so and give me more time for suspension. One year, two years. I didn’t do anything. I know who I am. I’ve never used steroids or anything like that. People only talk about it because they can’t beat us,” said the champion, without saying which substance was found in his system.
According to the commission, the short 'hook' period was due to the athlete providing evidence of his innocence. Due to the infraction, the fight against Primus was changed to a 'no contest' (without result). However, he was not stripped of the title. Usman Nurmagomedov is expected to defend his belt once again against Alexander Shabliy on September 7.
