Former UFC heavyweight champion (up to 120,2 kg), Cain Velazquez, is about to meet his fate. After pleading no contest to a series of charges, including attempted murder, Velasquez will face sentencing on October 18. The 42-year-old former fighter opted for this type of agreement, in which he accepts possible punishments without formally admitting guilt.

Cain Velazquez Velasquez was arrested in February 2022 after an intense car chase for about 18 miles. The former fighter was chasing Harry Goularte, who was accused of molesting his son at a daycare owned by Goularte's mother. During the chase, Velasquez fired multiple shots at the vehicle, wounding Goularte's stepfather, Paul Bender, in the arm.

According to authorities, Velasquez had searched his phone for “sexual assault cases where the victim’s family retaliated,” which would show his intention to take justice into his own hands. Prosecutors have harshly criticized the former fighter’s actions, saying he put innocent lives at risk by trying to take justice into his own hands.

Initially, Cain Velazquez was being held without bail but was released after eight months in detention. Now, with his trial date approaching, the former champion could face anything from alternative sentences, such as probation, to life in prison. However, due to the plea agreement, a harsher sentence is considered unlikely.
