Seeking to strengthen his candidacy for the belt, Royval entered the octagon with the mission of ending the unbeaten run of his opponent, who is now suffering his first defeat in seven UFC fights.

Fight disputed round by round

The two fighters began to spar in the center of the octagon and, after a kick from Royval, Taira attempted a takedown by grabbing his opponent's leg, but the American defended well. In the second half of the first round, Royval found the ideal distance, connecting jabs, straights and body kicks. In the final seconds, Taira landed a straight that shook Royval and, in the sequence, managed to take the fight to the ground.

In the second round, the Japanese fighter was aggressive from the beginning, landing a takedown and controlling his opponent's back. Alternating strikes and rear naked choke attempts, Taira controlled most of the match on the ground.

The third round started evenly, with both fighters sharing the action in the center of the octagon. Taira tried to take him down again, but Royval defended it and, soon after, landed a straight right that made the Japanese fighter stagger. While the American pressed for the knockout, Taira tried to take the fight to the ground. Near the end of the round, Royval landed a takedown, but the Japanese fighter reversed the position and ended the round on his opponent's back, threatening him with a rear naked choke.

Knowing that he had lost the previous round, Taira returned to the fight trying to impose his ground game. He managed to take his opponent's back in the first minute and maintained control on the ground until the end of the round.

Before the fifth and final round, both cornermen gave their athletes instructions, indicating that the fight was tied. In the decisive round, Royval used his greater reach to maintain distance, landing precise blows while Taira circled, waiting for the right moment to take him down. With 1 minute and 39 seconds on the clock, the Japanese finally took Royval down, but the American showed resilience and got back to his feet.

In the final seconds, the fight went to the ground again, and Royval almost finished the fight. At the end of the fight, one of the judges scored 48x47 for the Japanese and the other two scored the same score in favor of the North American, sealing Royval's victory by decision.
