The heavyweight king may be about to abdicate his throne. Jon Jones face Stipe Miocic No. UFC 309, an event that will be held on November 16, with an uncertain future. His coach, Brandon Gibson, is already treating the preparation for the fight as if it were the athlete's 'last dance'.
In an interview with 'MMA Fighting', Gibson revealed that, although Jones still has the physical and mental tools to remain at the top of MMA, the question of legacy has already been resolved. "Bones" has proven himself to be the best in the world on several occasions and, for his coach, the time to hang up the gloves may be near.

“I think physically and mentally he could put in another five or six high-level performances. There’s nothing left for Jon to prove. I think he really wants this fight with Stipe. I think this fight will help solidify Jon’s status as a great heavyweight champion, but we don’t talk about that every night in the gym. We’re totally focused on November 16th. But every workout, I approach it like it’s the last camp. I’m giving it my all,” Gibson said.
'Jon Jones has the right to retire whenever he wants'
While he is open to the possibility of Jones retiring, Gibson believes that if the champion wants to step into the Octagon one or two more times, it would be a "huge blessing." But he emphasizes that Jones, for all he has done, has the right to retire whenever he wants and that he, as his coach, will support whatever decision Jones makes.
“If we have one more after this, or two, it would be a great blessing. But I’m also ready to see Jon hang up the gloves. I would prefer him to retire obviously sooner rather than later. Of all the fighters, Jon deserves to retire when he wants. I will always support those decisions.” concluded the coach.
Considered the greatest light heavyweight (up to 93 kg) in history, Jones has 27 wins under his belt and only one loss by disqualification. Throughout his career, 'Bones' won 15 title fights and suffered no setbacks.
