WEC veteran dies at 43 after battle with cancer

Hiromitsu Miura competed in MMA and boxing, and at his peak he contested the WEC welterweight title against Carlos Condit.

The world of MMA has lost another of its pioneers. On Tuesday (5), the death of former fighter Hiromitsu Miura was announced on social media. He was only 43 years old and succumbed to leukemia. According to the statement, made by the former athlete's family, the death occurred on October 26. The disease had already been discovered in September.

Hiromitsu Miura

Hiromitsu Miura was one of the Japanese athletes who made the full transition to Western MMA after Pride was sold to the UFC. The fighter caught everyone's attention with his aggressive and courageous style, which resulted in great fights not only in Mixed Martial Arts, but also in boxing.

At his best in the sport, Miura faced Carlos Condit at WEC 35 in 2008. The fight was a dispute for the organization's world welterweight title (up to 77,1 kg). On that occasion, the Japanese fighter knocked the champion down several times with impressive judo throws. After four intense rounds, Miura was knocked out with a knee, in one of the best fights in WEC history.
